BACKGROUND

Tourism and the oceanfront have always been part of Catalina’s identity. When long-standing local restaurant owners combined their love of good food and drink, their passion for the nautical lifestyle, and their deep connection to the island, Catalina Island Rum Company was born. They set out to build a brand that paid tribute to the island’s storied past and the timeless bond between rum, the sea, and the spirit of fun and adventure that defines Catalina Island. Ion was engaged to develop the storylines that would characterize their light and dark rums.

From Rum-Runners to the Island life

Catalina Island, which lies off the Southern California coast, was once said to offer rum-runners a haven for stashing goods to smuggle onto the mainland. While the days of Prohibition are long gone, the laid-back island lifestyle and sense of adventure remain. Building on these tales, as well as the island's landmarks, seaplanes, and spectacular sights such as flying fish, the brand incorporates custom illustrations that capture both nostalgia and the imagination of tourists.
