Government of British Columbia
Ministry of Environment and Climate Change
Through the Single-Use and Plastic Waste Prevention Regulation, BC. is phasing out many hard-to-recycle single-use plastic items – reducing waste, protecting our environment, and creating a cleaner future for all British Columbians. Ion helped the provinical government create a recognizable campaign that communicated not only to the public about the changes they should expect, but to businesses with a series of downloadable tools such as factsheets, posters, table tents and shelf talkers.

Using a friendly animal character that can be found in British Columbia's coastal areas as well as river environments helped the campaign become easily recognizable as well as keep a light-hearted tone. The slogan "Little Ripples Make Big Change" refers to the water environment where single-use pollution is problematic to wildlife, but alludes to the small changes we can take to make a difference. A series of otter illustrations aids in depicting the many areas that single-use plastic affects.

The resulting design and comprehensive range of resources have proven very popular with the target audience (i.e. businesses including major national chains and the public, including Indigenous communities in B.C.). It has piqued interest from other departments, jurisdictions and organizations seeking to reduce waste and has been featured on the international stage at the fourth round of the UN Global Plastic Treaty negotiations.
